Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 small apples (preferably Jonagold)
  • 2 cups granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 drops red food coloring (or any preferred color)
  • 8 lollipop sticks, popsicle sticks, or thick wooden skewers
  • Wax paper or parchment paper for lining

Instructions

  1. Line a cookie sheet with wax or parchment paper. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly, then twist off the stems and insert sticks into the tops.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, water, and vinegar. Heat over medium heat until boiling without stirring. Brush down any crystallization on the sides of the pan.
  3. Allow to simmer for about 20 minutes until it reaches hard crack stage (approximately 150°C / 295-310°F).
  4. Remove from heat and stir in food coloring once bubbling subsides.
  5. Tilt the pan slightly and dip each apple into the hot syrup, rotating for an even coat before placing them on the prepared tray.
  6. Let set at room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving.
