  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • 1 ⅛ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 10-ounce bag mini semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 ½ sticks unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (cold)
  • 2 large eggs (divided)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Coarse sugar (optional for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F and line two baking pans with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, sea salt, baking powder, baking soda, and chocolate chips.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles large peas.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, one egg, and vanilla extract.
  5. Make a well in the dry mixture and pour in the wet ingredients; mix until just combined.
  6. On a floured surface, shape the dough into a rectangle and gently knead by folding it over itself.
  7. Divide into two rounds about 1 ½ inches tall; cut each round into six wedges and place on prepared pans.
  8. Brush with egg wash made from the remaining egg mixed with water; sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  9. Bake for about 18 to 20 minutes until lightly browned.
